Hazel Mae Bock – the basics

She was born Hazel Mae Malkmus on 4 Jul 1915 in Tiffin, Ohio. She loved having a birthday that coincided with our national holiday because it was always an occasion for a picnic and gathering of family. She graduated from Tiffin High School and attended the Business School at Tiffin University for a year (I’m not sure, http://www.ohiohistorycentral.org/entry.php?rec=2572&nm=Tiffin-University ). Her schooling was interrupted by a lack of tuition (this was during the Great Depression) and she found a job working as a secretary in Columbus in various State offices. It was in Columbus that she met Dick Bock. She married on 13 Apr 1940 when 25 years old and devoted herself to being a full-time homemaker and mother from that time forward. After Dick died in 1972, Hazel Mae rejoined the work force as a clerk in the Summit County Treasurer’s office. After ten (?) years of service there, she retired to enjoy time with her family and travels with friends. In the early 1990s as it became apparent that Hazel Mae’s memory was failing, she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. She died at Rockynol Nursing Home on 30 Nov 2000 at the age of 85.

Mom retired in Nov or Dec 1980.

Every spring Mom did her "spring cleaning". She would work for days - one room at a time - moving the furniture around, wash all the walls, the curtains, the windows and cleaning the cupboards. (Don't think I've had that energy)

In the winter, mom would take us (or drop us off) at Firestone Metro park to sled ride. In the summer we went to the State park often to swim. She loved to float in the water - of course, she used a bathing cap. When I would finally come out of the water, shivering cold, she would wrap that big blue terry cloth cover up around me - there was nothing better.

Judy, you are right. We had many birthday/4th of July celebrations on Ido. We could see fireworks from our backyard - at least from the upstairs bedroom. I know she loved when all of the family was together.

Don’t know why I’ve always thought that before she married, Mom worked in the Columbus office/department of a bureaucrat who later became governor of Ohio. In fact I could have sworn it was Lausche. But when I started researching the possibility of this, the dates for en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frank_J._Lausche don’t match (he was a municipal judge in Cleveland when she would have been working in Columbus). So now I’m back to square one trying to figure that one out. Anyone remember anything about this?

I can remember Mom & Dad playing Tripoli (betting with pennies) with Grandma Nana, Grandpa Jim and probably Judy & Jim – I was too young to play. Mom loved to play cards, whether it was bridge, rummy or solitaire. The first card game she taught me was rummy–as I got better we’d play to 500. She taught me many different types of solitaire - we often played double solitaire – which I still enjoying doing with my kids. As I got older I remember the many nights when I’d come home later in the evening and she would ask if I wanted to play scrabble. I treasure those memories of late nights spending time, chatting about everything and just being with her.

I found some of mom’s engagement announcements. They state the bride had been employed at the Home Owners Loan Corporation in Columbus for several years before getting married. They mention that dad had graduated from Keen’s Art School in Toledo and was a commercial artist with the Howard Swink Advetising Co. in Marion.
